What If Money Isn't The Problem?
If only I could believe it.
Most of us have experienced money problems. You check your bank account and wonder where the money went. You look at your payslip and think, "Surely I should have more left than this."
You tell yourself that next month will be different. And then next month comes and goes, and somehow the same thing happens again.
For years, I believed what many people believe.
People run out of money because they don't have enough of it.
And sometimes that is true.
The rising cost of living has placed enormous pressure on individuals and families. Many people are doing their best just to keep their heads above water.
But over the years, I'd become increasingly curious about money and how it functions in our lives.
I've met people on modest incomes who seemed to manage their finances surprisingly well. I've also met people earning far more than they need and are constantly stressed about money.
Some people live their lives waiting for the next payday.
Always trying to catch up on bills, hoping an increase in income will solve their money problem. Yet when more money arrived, the problem often remained, because it was never an income problem in the first place.
That made me think, there has to be a problem most are yet to see, me included.
What if running out of money isn't always about the amount of money we have?
What if there is something deeper going on?
So I asked Chatgpt a simple question:
Why Do People Run Out Of Money?
This was its response:
People often run out of money not simply because they do not earn enough, but because their income is being stretched across rising costs, unexpected expenses, financial commitments, lifestyle choices and poor planning. Without a clear system for allocating money, even a reasonable income can disappear before the month ends.
Let's break this down and explore further, using a few common areas of life.
The Income Trap
Many people believe they run out of money because they don't earn enough.
While income matters, earning more money doesn't always solve financial issues.
Many people receive pay rises, bonuses, or new opportunities for income only to find themselves in the same position a few months after the increase.
Why?
When money has no direction it often disappears. Without a plan, it's easy to spend reactively rather than intentionally.
Many people know how much they earn but have little idea where it actually goes, this leads to a very unstable lifestyle.
The Hidden Cost Of Our Lifestyle
As income increases, spending often increases too.
- The bigger house.
- The newer car.
- The latest phone.
- The extra subscriptions.
It's so easy to increase the things we use in our everyday lives, once we have more money. We constantly create newer costs of living, to go in line with any new income that appears.
Our everyday luxuries slowly become normal and spending increases to accommodate the new normal.
Yes, the hidden cost of our lifestyle adds up very quickly, if we don't pay attention and that can cause us to run out of money.
Emotional Spending And Financial Comfort
Money isn't always spent logically, sometimes it's spent emotionally.
Stress, boredom, loneliness, celebration, frustration, and even exhaustion can influence financial decisions more than we realise. This can cause one to run out of money very quickly.
Emotional spending is one of the common reasons people run out of money.
The Money Lessons We Never Learned
Many of us were taught maths at school, few of us were taught about money.
Everyone learns how to spend, few learn how to earn, some even learn how to manage it but rarely are we taught to allocate it wisely, so we can live a fulfilled life.
The Stories We Believe About Money
Another reason, people run out of money can be connected to the stories we believed growing up.
Our belief system is a powerful influence on how we handle our financial lives. Our upbringing, families, faith, culture, and life experiences among others have a great part to play in handling our finances.
The beliefs we carry quietly influence our financial decisions every day.
Many times without us even noticing. This can easily cause us to run out of money.
Debt A Major Culprit
Debt can quietly consume future income before it even arrives, causing us to constantly run out of money.
The more money committed to yesterday's decisions, the less freedom available for today's choices.
Debt is a symptom of money issues from our past or present life choices.
It's one of the biggest reasons people run out of money.
Let me now tell you Why I was running out of money
At the start of 2026, I had another sit down to sort out my finances and the general direction for my life. As a Christian I include prayer in my planning.
One of my prayer conversation was not wanting to have the same financial outcome I've always had year to year. I believed there was something terribly wrong with the system I and many others were using.
What I got as a response to this question, 'Was Tokunbo you don't have an income problem, you have an allocation problem.
No one needed to tell me, I know exactly what I needed to do. After reorganising my finances, I discovered a completely new way of handling my finances, and I've never run out of money again.
A Different Way To Think About Money
My question to you.
Do you run out of money? And have you been able to identify, the root cause of why you run out of money.
Fix this and you'll be on the road to a better and more fulfilling life.
